Cast from the same heat of bronze as the Coldbrook tenor, four months apart, the treble is the ring’s smallest bell — 660mm across, 145kg — and by far its hardest to tune cleanly, since a small bell’s partials sit closer together and drift further with every pass of the lathe.
Ring trebles are rung first in every change, so beyond true pitch the foundry tunes for a clean, fast-decaying strike: a treble that rings on too long muddies the following blows. The bell hangs alongside the tenor and four others at St. Aidan’s, Coldbrook.
