About the Foundry

Peal was founded in 1891 as a general iron and brass foundry, and cast its first church bell almost by accident — a broken bell brought in for scrap metal turned out to be recastable, and the parish that owned it became the foundry’s first bell client. Bell founding became the foundry’s sole business within a decade and has remained so ever since.

Every bell the foundry casts is bell bronze — roughly 78% copper, 22% tin, the same ratio bell founders have used for centuries because it genuinely rings better than any other common alloy, not because of tradition for its own sake. The foundry still uses loam-mould casting for every bell rather than the sand-casting shortcuts some larger operations have adopted, and every bell is individually tuned on the lathe against its five true partials — hum, prime, tierce, quint, and nominal — before it ever leaves the workshop.

The foundry casts single bells, full rings, and carillon instruments, and also restores and retunes historic bells for towers that already have a ring in need of care.
